5 k Handicap and pb

20060930-005-1I competed in my first 5 k handicap event this morning with the Hobbos. On arriving I wasn’t too sure on how the handicap system worked. It was explained that they attempt to handicap runners so as they finish on 35 mins. I was given a handicap time of 14 mins assuming a 4 min pace. I think some of the others thought that that was a bit too generous and should have been around 15 mins something.

Before the main event, with James and Stu Mac, we ran the course or 1 lap of it (2.5 km) for warmup.

On 14 mins I was off and just went as fast as I could, well, fast for me. My main goal was to get sub 20 mins. On the first lap I passed quite a few in front of me and fortunately I kept that pace up for the entire run. Another little goal I developed during the run was not to let any back-markers pass and after 5 k’s none did. I think if it was a longer run a few would have certainly reeled me in.

The upshot is that I came home in a time of 19:27 which works out to a pace of 3:53 /km. Since this is my first real 5 km race this time is also a PB. My heart rate was working overtime for this event. The maximum was 167 bpm and the average was way up there at 163 bpm.

20060930-006Congrats must go to Steve Glover as he ran a pb in 18 mins something and won this morning’s event. It certainly looks like you were putting in the effort Steve.

I wore my new Asics Kayano’s and no problems whatsoever, admittedly I did vaseline my feet just in case.

Nearly forgot, a special thanks to Mark Maloney the photographer for the day, he kindly supplied me with the photos above. I’m sure he’ll have a heap more in the upcoming newsletter.

Nice run Steve, I was thinking that 20 mins was a bit tame for you. But as you said you have never had an official 5k race before, congrats again great time.

Congrats Steve on the great time and a PB! Sound like you are all set for MM, despite work getting in the way of running last weekend. Look forward to reading your race report afterwards!

MAR.

Geez, do I really look like that when I run!?!

I'm sure you'll be joining me in the under 19 min club very shortly, especially since you'll be starting off 15:40 and not 14 mins next time.

Congrats on the 5km PB Steve, obviously you would will be able to go faster than this if you didn't have to do the tight U-turns.

All the best for nest Sunday, lets hope there is NO northerly!

That is so fast. I enjoy the 5k runs now. Just turn on the speed.

Good time and sounds like a great event. I wish I lived over your side of the city sometimes. Seems like such a good running community.
