PB and Sub 90

Half-Marathon; mission accomplished but it wasn't easy. Two goals acheived:-

  • Set a PB, and
  • Sub 90

The upshot is that for 21.1 km I ran it in 1:28:06 which equates to an average pace of 4:10/km. Average heart rate: 160 bpm, apparently 89% of maxHR. To say the least, I'm stoked.

I started off reasonably fast, running about or just over 4 min pace. I recall a marshall at the 5 km mark calling out 20 mins something and at the 10 km mark 40 mins 30 seconds or thereabouts. (I'm yet to run a sub 40 for 10 km.) I knew at the 10 km mark that I headed out too quick, I was planning on around 42 or 43 mins at the 10 km mark, but that wasn't to be. I maintained the pace for the next 5 or so km before I slowed down a bit. If you can do the maths you'll note that the second half was slower than the first. It wasn't until about 4 km to go that I knew a sub 90 was on offer, even if I slowed to 5 min pace.

A special thanks must go to MorseyRuns (aka Sara) and her crew, RunJaneRun and Em. They were spectating and parked themselves on the side of the road near the drinks station. The course we ran incorparated three loops of the Yarra Blvd. For the last two loops and running past them they held up signs, the first said, "Looking Good", and on the last loop, "Run Faster". It was a good pick-me-up.

The usual suspects from Cool Running and Aus Run were there plus a few AV people I know (well, it was an AV event). A few new faces from Cool Running (Fish, John, Biggers). Old faces being Tiger Boy, Rohan, JH, Stu Mac and adh (Adam).

I've updated my table of half-marathons to include today's run.

That's all.

Steve - you made it look

Steve - you made it look easy this morning, hardly raised a sweat from where we were sitting! (Thanks for not throwing your half filled water cup at us, or is that half empty??) sara

Deceptive

Looks can be deceptive though I didn't think I was making it look easy.

Congrats!!!!

Well done Steve. Wow, sub 90 is fantastic. Sounds like you are peaking at the right time.

The hard work is paying off. Now stay healthy, and uninjured, and your marathon PB dream will come true.

PB for 10 km

I've just realized that for this run I was passing through 10 km about 40:30. The significance of this is that it's 13 seconds better than my PB of 40:43 which was set back in February 2006. All my 10 km events are here.

Who knows, after the Melbourne Marathon (7 Oct 2007), might look at an attempt at a sub 40 for the 10 k. I'm feeling quite confident for it after today's effort.

Well done Steve, a very

Well done Steve, a very successful hit out for you this morning

And you do make it look easy :-)

good to catch up again

Excellent effort mate ... well done

Steve, that is a superb effort and an excellent result. Well done - after all the hard work you certainly deserve it. Should be ready for a new marathon PB too now !

Nice work Steve -

Nice work Steve - congratulations on the PB - now for a sub 3 hours marathon???

;-)

Congrats

Congratulations on the fabulous time! What an awesome effort!!!

Well done!

That's a great PB Steve. You should definitely go for a sub-40 after recovering from the marathon. Zatopek? A track race would be good for sitting on an even pace.

we are all a bit tired after the half

Hi steve, pity I did not know it was you I was running with during the run Sunday. I let you go once you were averaging too close to 4min pace. I was wanting around 4m10. I figured any quicker and I'd blow before the finish. I started to try wind up on the last lap and once I hooked in with the girl who came past with a km to go I figured I had nothing to loose. You were running well and looked strong early on. Well done on the PB. I'll be stuck in town in month or so, will try catch up with you for a lunch run or something.
We deserve a few easy ones after a half PB :-)
