Are you good enough

I came across this puzzle the other day. Does anybody reckon they can solve it.

Neighbours
This quiz was made up by Albert Einstein and according to him 98% will not solve it.

There is a row of five houses, each having a different colour. In these houses live five people of various nationalities. Each of them nurtures a different beast, likes different drinks and smokes different brand of cigars.

* The Brit lives in the Red house.
* The Swede keeps dogs as pets.
* The Dane drinks tea.
* The Green house is on the left of the White house.
* The owner of the Green house drinks coffee.
* The person who smokes Pall Mall rears birds.
* The owner of the Yellow house smokes Dunhill.
* The man living in the centre house drinks milk.
* The Norwegian lives in the first house.
* The man who smokes Blends lives next to the one who keeps cats.
* The man who keeps horses lives next to the man who smokes Dunhill.
* The man who smokes Blue Master drinks beer.
* The German smokes Prince.
* The Norwegian lives next to the Blue house.
* The man who smokes Blends has a neighbour who drinks water.

Who has fish at home? (are you one of the 2%).

Solution hint

Okay, here's a hint. Read the question, what is it asking? Compare the question to the statements given.

Insufficient Information

The solution to the problem is insufficient information or unknown. There is no mention of fish in any of the 15 statements of fact and therefore impossible to deduce which owner has fish.

It is correct that from the information given we do not know what pet the German has, but that was not the question. It may be the case that the German nurtures fish but also it may be the case he nurtures spiders, frogs etc but there is no information to support that, as is the same for fish.

But... you would have to

But... you would have to assume that every person, only smokes one thing, drinks one thing, and nurtures one pet. The German is the only one left so you would have to assume that he is the one with the fish. It doesnt mention anything about a fish, BUT, it also doesnt mention anything about them having more than one of anything...

I think that it is the German in the green house aswell. Who drinks milk???

Can't assume

You are correct, from the 15 statements of fact we can correctly deduce that the only thing missing or can't be filled in cell (if you used a spreadsheet) is that pertaining to the pet owned by the German.

Now, read the question. The question is a question not a statement of fact. The question could have been "Who owns the frog?"

If the question was framed, "What pet does the German nurture?" - The answer would be not known.

Foiled!

Now I know why they say "you know what happens when you assume .... " :-)
